Prior to 1959, only the privileged upper class of Cuban society attended universities in Cuba or overseas. Universal access to high quality educational institutions and libraries has been one of the successes of Cuba since 1959.
There are numerous universities, including professional schools, throughout Cuba. The new Latin American Medical School in Western Havana offers free tuition for students from all over the World, including USA citizens.
The University of Habana has always been a source of enlightenment and student unrest, including the activities of Fidel Castro in the 1950s. Cuba keeps a view close watch on dissident student activities today and promptly interrupts challenges to strict socialist society thinking on university campuses.
